A company can license the same API management platform as its best-run competitor and still get worse results, because the platform is a toolbox, not a plan. Apigee can enforce security policy, analyze traffic, and manage the entire API lifecycle — but only for the APIs someone actually configured it to handle, in a way that matches how the business really operates. Taliferro's Apigee consulting exists in that gap: turning a powerful, mostly-unused platform into one actually running the business's real API strategy, not just sitting on the invoice.

Apigee is a genuinely capable platform: design, secure, deploy, monitor, and scale APIs from one place. Most organizations that buy it use a small fraction of what it can actually do — default policies left in place, analytics nobody looks at, security features that exist but were never turned on for the APIs that actually need them. The license is the same either way. The results aren't, because the gap between "we have Apigee" and "we use Apigee well" is entirely a matter of configuration and strategy, not the platform itself.
Apigee consultants aren't selling access to features the platform already has — they're closing the gap between what it can do and what it's set up to do. That means understanding the business's actual objectives first, then configuring the platform around them: which APIs need which policies, where the traffic patterns actually are, what a realistic scaling plan looks like as the business grows. A platform configured around a real strategy behaves completely differently than the same platform left on defaults.

Apigee can enforce strong security policy and compliance controls — OAuth, encryption, audit logging — but only for the APIs someone configured that way. A regulated business in finance or healthcare with unconfigured security policies isn't protected by the platform's capability; it's exposed by the gap between capability and configuration. The same is true of Apigee's analytics: the platform can surface real insight into usage patterns and performance, but only if someone set it up to track what actually matters to this business, not the default dashboard.
As a business grows, its API needs change — but a platform doesn't automatically scale with a business just because it's technically capable of scaling. That requires a deliberate design decision made before the growth arrives, not after the platform starts buckling under load nobody planned for.
Apigee is a powerful platform. It is not, by itself, a strategy. Taliferro's consulting work is the part that turns platform capability into results specific to a business — configured around real objectives, not left at whatever came out of the box. The license gets a company access to the tools. The consulting is what makes the tools actually do something.
