Not every post on Taliferro's blog is about consulting — sometimes it's just a story worth telling. This one's about how a small, magnetic stylus can vanish in plain sight for a week, and where it turned up.

One evening my wife handed me my iPad in bed, and in the process knocked the Apple Pencil loose from its magnetic spot on the edge. Neither of us saw where it went or heard it land, so we assumed it had fallen straight down and searched under the bed. Nothing.
It wasn't tangled in the sheets, and it wasn't in either nightstand drawer, even though we checked in case a drawer had been open when it fell. By the time we'd exhausted the obvious spots, it was late, so I called off the search until morning.
The next day I got a mop under the bed hoping to sweep it out along with the dust. No luck — just dust and a stray sheet. I emptied the nightstand completely and even lifted it to check underneath. Still nothing. This went on for several days: same searches, same result.
The Apple Pencil doesn't work with Find My, so there was no way to just ping it. I did find a Bluetooth-radar app that claimed it could help, but held off, still convinced it had to be somewhere obvious in the room.
The daily routine of lifting the mattress and stripping the sheets kept turning up nothing, until my wife decided to check the far side of the bed for once. I held the iPad up as a makeshift flashlight, and she spotted it.
It had been stuck to the underside of the metal bed frame the entire time, held there by its own magnet. Looking down from above, it was completely invisible — the only way to see it was from underneath, looking up. A whole week of searching, and it had been about two feet from where we slept the entire time.
