The Office of Equity had to make GenAI accountable before adoption moved too far
The Washington State Office of Equity was established to embed equity across state government and reduce disparities in how systems serve Washingtonians, especially historically marginalized communities.
In January 2024, Executive Order 24-01 required the Office to lead development of a framework for fair, ethical, and equitable use of Generative Artificial Intelligence across state agencies.
The work had to balance technical risk, public trust, agency usability, procurement needs, legal safeguards, and community voice. The goal was not simply to approve or reject GenAI. The goal was to create a model for responsible use.
